The bean nighe (Scottish Gaelic for "washer woman") of Irish and Scottish lore was similar to the banshee, as it too could be found at isolated streams washing the blood-stained garments of those who were about to die. They were described as being small in stature, dressing all in green, and having red webbed feet.
If a person could find a bean nighe and get between it and the river before it sees her, the bean nighe would grant three wishes. She would also answer and three questions put to her on the provision she can ask and expect to have answered honestly, three questions back.
