Possibly originating in Etruscan mythology, Orcus (“oath”) was the god of the underworld who appeared as a hairy, bearded giant and acted as a reaper who would take pity on those suffering and gently take them away to the afterlife. Later he became the Roman god of the underworld and a punisher of broken oaths. When absorbed into Christian demonology, he was ranked as the prince of the Undead and the demon of death who commands the underworld (see PRINCES OF Hell).[1]
